What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the way the body uses digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food people eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body.

There are three types of diabetes; type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes and of these type 2 is the most detrimental to minorities. The burden of diabetes is much greater for minority populations than the white population.  Certain minorities also have much higher rates of diabetes-related complications and death, in some instances by as much as 50 percent more than the total population.
